I have a neat little four volume set of the Coptic Synaxarium, published by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church of Chicago. The whole set is now available online in one pdf file, here, published by the St George Coptic Orthodox Church of Chicago. The Coptic Calendar is based directly on the ancient Egyptian calendar, maintaining the same month names and number of days in each month. The only difference has been the insertion of a sixth day into The Little Month, which normally only has five days, every four years. The Coptic Calendar thus very neatly lines up with the Julian Calendar, though not so neatly with the Revised Julian and Gregorian calendars. More on that is available in the quite good Wikipedia article on the Coptic Calendar. The Coptic year begins on August 29 of the Julian year. All the months have thirty days, except for the last month, The Little Month, as mentioned above. Note also that there are various spellings of the names of the months. There appears to be no systematized spelling for English usage yet. I’ll use the spellings found in the books themselves. What follows here is the list of Saints and commemorations found in the above-mentioned publication of the Coptic Synaxarium, particularly for comparison with the Eastern Orthodox calendar of commemorations.

Great Post! Fascinating!
Seeing Severus of Antioch listed for tomorrow reminded me, I really wish there was a simple way to check on the veneration or lack thereof of any particular ecclesiastical writer or figure. I know Severus was a monophysite, thus putting him on the Copts’ calendar but not ours, but I’m thinking of people like Cassiodorus. And I seem to recall hearing that Theophilus of Alexandria was an Orthodox saint.
I don’t know that Theophilus is. He was instrumental in getting St John Chrysostom deposed, heading the Council of the Oak. It’s fair to say that he’s not on the Orthodox dance card for that. But, he could be. St Jerome is an Orthodox saint, after all, and he helped Theophilus accomplish that. (My impression is that St Jerome really is a saint for the last few quiet years of his life after his library was destroyed and he stopped writing. He must’ve done some good during that time to make up for all the poor decisions he made earlier and the pain he caused so many people.)
Have you heard of Cassiodorus as a Saint? I hadn’t heard that. Searching for “αγιος κασσιοδωρος” turns up nothing, so that’s pretty useful! It would be helpful if there were some registry or other that listed that stuff. Well, you thought it up, Aaron, so you have to do it! Get to work!
Interesting update on Theophilus: A little thing I was reading about St Cyril said that Theophilus was listed on the Coptic and Syrian calendars, ‘but not on most eastern or any western ones’. This piece on St Cyril is a hoot: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/06/27.html
Hm. That’s not a particularly helpful page otherwise. I tend to find spelling an indicator of quality…. It’s likewise far too snarky. I side with the cabby, and had I been the cabby, I would’ve dumped the presumptuous bumpkin in a seedy part of town.
Agreed, but I thought the dialogue between the writer and the cabbie quite funny.
Bad spelling kills me though.
Oh, yeah, it was pretty funny. That cabby was probably an angel trying to save the academic’s soul, while the real cabby was off on a doughnut break somewhere.
I remember having a “discussion” with someone who though that spelling isn’t important if the presentation is good. I was adamant: poor spelling makes one look ignorant, and there is no discussion on this point. It’s simply a fact of intellectual life. Intelligent people spell well. You either spell the words properly, or keep away from the pen/keyboard. She was indignant. Toughskies.
By the way, I just found the following passage in the book I’m editing by Met. John (Zizioulas), in an essay on the ecumenical ‘dialogue’ with the non-Chalcedonians: ‘Persons not officially condemned or anathematized but nevertheless not easily acceptable in the consciousness of the Church of the one party, mainly for psychological reasons. Such is the case, for example, of Theophilus of Alexandria who is revered as a saint in the Oriental Churches but regarded and described in the Eastern Orthodox Synaxaria as a very bad person connected with and even responsible for persecutions against persons recognized as saints in these Synaxaria.’
There’s something missing in the first sentence.
His Eminence is clearly referring to Theophilus’ role in the exile and death of our Father among the Saints, John the Golden-Mouth, Archbishop of Constantinople! St Jerome had a hand in that, too, as did St Epiphanios of Cyprus, though the latter at least repented, and died en route homeward from Constantinople.
As far as I have been told, the Coptic Orthodox Calendar starts on the 5th of September.
That will make your date out by 7 days.
Am I correct or wrong?
Hey Chris,
The Coptic new year starts on September 11 and thats when we celebrate the Feast of El-Nayrouz
Thanks,
Tony
Is there a commemoration of the DEPARTURE of our LORD from Egypt and His return to the Holy Land?
I’m not sure, Jacob. I see that Bashans 24 (June 1) commemorates the ENTRY into Egypt of the Holy Family, but in the list of Coptic mulid celebrations I have, it doesn’t mention that there is a commemoration for their leaving. I’ll ask a Coptic friend.
