The tables below present the revision and refinement of the so-called Ammonian sections and Eusebian Canon Tables (technically, the whole is the Eusebian Apparatus) as found in the Syriac Peshitta Gospels using modern book, chapter, and verse citation. The Peshitta revision and refinement (accomplished by unknown persons soon after Eusebius introduced his system) works on the same principles: the text is sectioned according to similarities, and each section is assigned to a table based on its relationship to other similar sections. In the case of the Peshitta system, however, the level of detail has been increased so that there are many more sections than in the original Eusebian system: 1,162 sections in the Eusebian system, and 1,386 in the Peshitta system. In addition, each page of the Peshitta gospels included a summary table of parallel sections appearing on that page for the benefit of the reader, something that was only very rarely employed in the Greek and other traditions. The system demonstrates an encouragement for a reader to engage with the texts through this system of marginal parallels to gain a greater familiarity with the texts. Unfortunately, this superior system of the Peshitta was later abandoned with the Harklean Syriac translation, which opted to employ the original Eusebian system.
I’ve compiled the tables below from the work of Philip Edward Pusey, Tetravengelium Sanctum juxta Simplicem Syrorum Versionem (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1901). This volume presents the full Syriac Peshitta version of the Gospels with marginal notations and critical apparatus, with a facing page Latin translation. The Serto type used for the Syriac is very nice. Pusey was very interested in the Peshitta version of the Eusebian Apparatus, ensuring the accuracy of his presentation of it in his work through the consultation of many manuscripts.
The presentation below provides, for the sake of clarity, footnotes relating the equivalent ending or beginning places of the Peshitta sections in the Greek text and the NRSV as a help to the reader to apply the Peshitta system to other versions. I thought they would be more useful than expecting a reader to figure out the citations of parts of verses (e.g. 1.2a, etc). The versification is that of the Nestle-Aland Greeek editions, specifically that of NA27. Generally, I followed the punctuation in the Greek for those subdivisions, or parataxis (καὶ as the separator) where there was no intraverse punctuation. The note numbering follows each gospel within each table in turn in sequence, so the notes for the first gospel in the table are followed in sequence by the notes of the next, and so on. That is, the notes are sequential in regards to the gospels themselves, but not particularly in the tables except in the first column.
