In various works tables of citations and allusions refer to the Apocalypse of Elijah. Although it is to be welcomed that this work receives attention, there are often problems with the citation, as ApEl is a book which has no long tradition of versification associated with its text. This, over the last decades, has become a problem.
I present here a concordance of the versification as used by O. S. Wintermute in Charlesworth’s OTP 1.721-753 with the versification used by Jean-Marc Rosenstiehl in L’Apocalypse d’Élie: Introduction, Traduction, et Notes, which appears to have been the preferred edition of this text prior to the OTP Wintermute edition, which utilized a substantially complete unpublished papyrus from the Chester Beatty collection. The variety of versification is apparent even between contributors to the OTP volumes themselves. The table below will assist a reader in straightening those out. The other major edition, Steindorff’s, includes the Coptic Akhmimic and Sahidic texts used (in part) by both Rosenstiehl and Wintermute, but his edition does not include any alternate versification.
The table below is fairly self-explanatory. The column on the left includes the versification of Wintermute’s translation of the Apocalypse of Elijah, with clarifying short quotations to show mid-verse breaks. The column on the right includes the versification used by Rosenstiehl in his translation. The major differences between the two will be found in not simply the numbering, but in the very separation of the text into verses. In addition, the lengthy chapter 3 in Rosenstiehl (99 verses!) is separated into three separate chapters in Wintermute (3, 4, and 5). Whether this was done first by Wintermute or by another commentator, I am unaware.
