The Georgian Lectionary (Tarchnischvili)

Let me just say first off that this is the lectionary that I’ve put the most time into, and perhaps therefore have the most familiarity with and for which I have the most affection. The process that led to the creation of this page began in the midst of a serious illness in late 1998 (adult chicken pox: both icky and dangerous), with my checking all of the scriptural references given by Tarchnischvili, ascertaining the corresponding NRSV citations for each. After an initial compilation of only the readings into an index, I decided to produce a full translation, as a companion to the Armenian lectionaries, which are quite similar, as mentioned below. I was also fascinated by observing the development of the lectionary of Jerusalem. This form of the Jerusalem lectionary, as preserved in the Georgian tradition, dates to approximately 700 AD. Please note that my translation was on occasion rushed, and may not be the best, as it is based only upon the Latin translation of the Georgian provided by Tarchnischvili for those, like myself, who know no Georgian. Suggestions for improvements are certainly welcome, as well as any questions.

This lectionary is clearly in a relation of descent from the Jerusalem lectionary represented by the Armenian tradition. The Georgian Lectionary shows an elaboration of the prescribed psalms and hymns, and an increase in the variety of the types of those hymns. Some include incipits which are recognizable in modern Greek Orthodox services. However, the Greek Lectionary differs markedly from the Jerusalem tradition. Tradition, however, indicates the origin of the Greek Lectionary to be the Mar Saba Monastery in the Judean desert, so similarities in hymnography may be explained by this proximity.

It is the Latin translation which I have translated here into English.

The reference numbers in the left column are those of Tarchnischvili. Within the translation itself, I’ve included scriptural citations in square brackets, and generally dispensed with including the incipits/explicits of the biblical texts, except in the Psalms and Lines (stichoi), where I include the incipits, and in a few cases where there are notable differences, as in section 149. This is Hebrews 11.32-40 with some very interesting interpolations indicating the identities of the various martyrs. I have translated the indicator for a response, stichus, as line, simply because the word means line and does not always represent a response in context here. Otherwise, most of the liturgical hymnological terms (hypakoi, troparion, etc) have not been translated. Regarding the mysterious term kverexiI have learned from email correspondence from the Rev. Dr. George A. Leylegian of Saint Gregory Armenian Church in San Francisco and from Hieromonk Gregory of the Xristianskij Vostok (Christian Orient) periodical Editorial Board, that the term is related to the Greek kēryx and kērygma (preaching or proclamation) and Armenian qaroz (exhortation), and that it refers to either a paragraph-length or antiphonal ektenia or litany, typically one being appropriate to the place and time of use. I’ve thus renderedkverexi here with litany.

Psalm citations are given with the LXX numbering first, then with that of the NRSV. References to points within the document are also given within square brackets, utilizing the reference numbers in the left column.

The study of this lectionary would undoubtedly yield much information in various aspects of Jerusalem’s early Christian period. Even immediately, in the readings and hymns selected for the Christimas vigil, we find a fascinating method of interpretation of Old Testament texts at work. This method of interpretation is quite striking, and persists throughout the lectionary. It deserves close attention in order to determine the tie between the event and the reading at times. Sometimes this is due to the use of the Septuagint, which was clearly the version in use here. It’s quite enjoyable to observe ancient hermeneuticsat work. The various places, processions, and churches mentioned also make this a fascinating source for a particular time in the history of Christians in Jerusalem, with all their long-standing traditions and practices not yet come under Muslim restrictions, which would eventually ban processions, and under which dominion nearly all of the churches mentioned in this work would fall into ruin, never to be restored.

This is a rite and order of orthodox practice, as they do in Jerusalem.

a.) Come, you faithful ones, let us sing today of the suffering of the Savior. Let me split open the insane Judas, and let us reproach the Jews.
b.) To Judas, thus: For what reason have you sold your Lord and Master Who also created you? Were the other disciples not generous to you for healing the sick? Even so, because of your deformity, we will complain and say: O, Judas!
c.) To the Jews, thus: For what reason have you condemned to death the King of Glory? Did He not illuminate your blind and raise the dead as from sleep? You have placed retribution on the Lord, you crazy people.
d.) Even because of this foolish action of yours, we deplore, and say: O Jews, though you supposed He perished in death, the same will nevertheless rise again and will revive us with Him.

When all the office of the morning service is performed, after “Glory in the highest,” they say:
Troparion, mode 6:
a.) O Lord, Gamaliel appears honorable among the people, secretly inscribed is Your disciple Nicodemus.
b.) But Joseph from Armiathea scorned riches; he rejected fear of the Jews. When Your disciples scattered, he acted bravely.
c.) Willingly, he was not ashamed of Your need, but buried Your flesh. O Christ God, glory to You.
Hypakoi, mode 6:
a.) You disdained a spirit of power, willingly upon the cross You poured out the spirit like the wicked, and the insolent soldier opened with a lance Your incorruptible side
b.) from which You poured blood and water, by which You sanctified the apostles, water which You made a purification from sins. O omnipotent Christ God, glory to You.
And they go up to the altar and do a litany and prayer with knee-bending and read the readings. Prayer with knee-bending.
And they say a Psalm, mode 6: For you will not desert my soul in hell…corruption [15.10/16.10]

On Great Saturday, twelve readings are read in Jerusalem and in Saint Sabba, and in Holy Sinai with psalms, as written above, all the psalms with alleluia in alternating changes and at the end of every one of the psalms, Glory, and a litany, and prayer with knee-bending. At the end of every one, the same readings, the same litany, and prayer with knee-bending.

APPENDIX 2 A.: Letter of Cyril of Jerusalem [see 959 on May 7]
Reading; letter written by Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem. To the beloved of God and God-serving Constantine the Unconquered.
Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem greets you in the Lord. Hail. This is the first, the head of books, I offer to you, God-loving king.
It is fitting for you to receive, and me to offer. No word of flattery is told, but a heavenly message and illumination from God.
Not a composition of many words and of learned writings, but that predicted by the Holy Gospels, and perfected in events — a testimony to the truth.
Certain others have often made for Your Honor a crown for the same, of shining gold and various flashing jewels, offering it to you.
But we do not offer to you an earthly crown. Those of the earth have an end;
however, a heavenly gift has no passing: help for the reign of Your Piety. Let us quickly go and make note of what has appeared in Jerusalem for Your Piety.
It is certainly not because you are just now beginning to serve God in ignorance, for you also are able to teach another of Him Whom you serve, but rather this which you knew is now confirmed. You received the kingdom of your father, and you have a heavenly inheritance given to you by God. To the God of every king is it now pleasing to give thanks. And rather also be strengthened, fearless against the enemy.
The work of your empire is beloved of God, for in you, know that wonders are being done.
For under the God-loving and blessed Constantine your father was the living cross found in Jerusalem, and God increased the grace of God and diligent searching in piety so that the hidden holy places might be found.
But under you, O lord and most pious king, more than under your most pious father, Your Piety.
Rather indeed now, not from earth, but from heaven, wonders of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the only born Son of God who shattered death.
Of the Holy Cross I will inform you: a form in shining marble (?) appeared. In fact, it was in the holy fifty days, Pentecost, in the month of May, on the seventh day, at the third hour of the day, a very exceedingly beautiful cross of light was seen hanging in the sky over Holy Golgotha, stretching to the Holy Mount of Olives.
It appeared to not only one or two, but to the multitudes of the city it plainly appeared, nor, as others may strongly think, quickly passing by in the imagination, but for a long time in the view of the eyesight. In fact, its splendor conquered the light of the sun,
which under its conquering light was darkened, for it was greater than the sun. Those around who saw the splendor and all terrified of it ran to the churches, all the population of the city.
At this divine apparition fear and joy took hold of all alike: young, old, men and women equally. Every man of years with those of his house watched with (?) the pupils of their eyes.
Natives and foreigners, even pagans come from other places, all with one mouth praised and took thought of Christ Jesus our God, the only born Son of God and the Maker of Wonders.
The faith of Christians is completely the service of God; not only from the hearing of wisdom is the word, but from the demonstration of faith and power [cf. 1Cor 2.4],
not only announced by men, but witnessed by God from heaven.
And we, dwellers in Jerusalem, saw with our eyes the unapproachable wonder, and to the only God, and to His one only-born Son, with the Holy Spirit, beautiful thanks of worship to Him we give and we will give.
For your power and dominion we offer and will offer much prayer in these holy places.
It is suitable that this heavenly vision not pass into silence, but it is given from God to announce to Your Dominion.
Therefore I have hastened to write to you, so that on that good foundaton in which you first believed, with that knowledge of God quickly announced to you, you build firmly, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Take assurance without fear, so you may be full of all the usual strength.
Indeed, you have God as a strength, through the Cross you even have victory prepared before your eyes like a glorious honor: that sign which appeared to you, which heavenly image is even already predicted.
For with this wonder, O God-obeying king, the testimonies of the Prophets and the voice of Christ and the writings of the Holy Gospels are subsequently now fulfilled, and will again be fulfilled.
And truly, in a section in the Gospel of Matthew, when the Savior wished to impart future signs to His blessed apostles, with these words and splendidly foreknowing, he said, “Then will shine the sign of the Son of Man in the heavens” [Mt 24.30].
Now take the books of the Gospel of God, as usual take the book in your hands, at this sentence you will find written the prediction of this witness.
Rather also you, O lord, I beg that you may often meditate. Otherwise, I beg, there in all the writings left of the predictions of our Savior, may you also make many investigation with learning, so that not one of us may go to the opposing enemy. [?]
I offer to you this sermon, O God-obeying king [illegible] to you a voice.
